Statement on Religious Freedom Executive Order

Today, President Trump signed a vital executive order that will provide additional protections for individuals and groups exercising their religious freedoms.

First and foremost, the President has asked the IRS to “use maximum discretion” when applying the Johnson Amendment, a rule that effectively attempts to make the freedom of religion and the freedom of expression mutually exclusive by imposing political speech restrictions on religious groups. Effectively, this executive order will keep the IRS from threatening the tax status of churches that take a political stand based on their religious beliefs.

This executive order will also help protect the many businesses and religious groups that have been negatively impacted by Obamacare by providing regulatory relief, ensuring they will not be forced to pay for plans that violate their core religious beliefs.

Our nation was founded by settlers who were fleeing religious persecution, and the freedom of religion is deeply ingrained in our culture. This executive order will help eliminate regulatory provisions that stand in the way of our First Amendment rights.
